Policy: Attendance, Late Homework and Missed Exams

  1. Class Attendance
  2. Late Homework
  3. Missed Exams

1. Class Attendance[ top ]

History shows a strong positive correlation between class attendance and grades. When students ask how to do well in this course we tell them "come to class and take good notes." Simple advice, but for some easier said than done. In order to emphasize to you just how important class attendance is, the following policy will provide extra credit points for those who attend class on a regular basis.

We will be taking attendance at randomly chosen times on randomly chosen class days. These days may or may not be the same for both the 11 and 12 o'clock classes therefore you must attend the class for which you are registered in order to receive credit for your attendance in the event that attendance is taken. Administratively we cannot keep up with you if you do not attend your class. Since class attendance may be taken at the beginning of class, please be on time to be sure you are counted as here. Class attendance may also be taken during the last few minutes of class or anytime during class. Please do not come to us with excuses regarding why you were not in class. No one is being penalized for not being here.

For every day attendance is taken and you are counted here, you will be given 1 point to be added to your next exam. For example, if attendance is taken twice between the beginning of the semester and your first exam and you are here both times you will be given 2 additional points on the first exam. If attendance is taken 3 more times between the first and second exam and you are here each time, you will be given 3 points on your second exam. If attendance is taken 3 more times between the second exam and the final and you are here each time, you will be given 3 points on your final exam. As you can see over the course of the semester, this can make a substantial difference in your grades. Historical data shows that those who attend class make significantly higher test grades than those who do not -- just another reason for attending class.

We want you to do well in the class. An attendance bonus is our way of rewarding those of you who on a daily basis make the effort to be here throughout the semester. There is quite a bit of material covered in this course and we take very seriously our responsibility to help you to identify the important information during our class time together.

You should attend the class for which you are registered. This is a no-budge-policy.

2. Late Homework[ top ]

Your homework is due in the class you are registered for on the due date specified. Homework will be accepted at the TA's office (slip it under their door) with a 5-point penalty up until 3 PM that afternoon. Homework received after that time will not be accepted without a documented and verifiable medical excuse. This policy is necessary in order to be fair to all.

For the two assignments that are to be turned in via e-mail, if your e-mail is not sent by midnight on the due date, then it will be accepted up until 8 AM the following morning with a 5-point penalty. After that time it will not be accepted without a documented and verifiable medical excuse.

You should attend the class for which you are registered. This is a no-budge-policy.

3. Missed Exams[ top ]

You must take the exam on the day it is given with the class for which you are registered. If you miss an exam without a documented and verifiable medical excuse you will receive a "zero" for the exam. Please be advised that the student health center is no longer able or willing to provide such documentation therefore documentation from the health center is likely to be inadequate. While this policy may seem quite strict it is necessary in order to be fair to all and in order for the TAs to spend time helping you learn the course material rather than engaged in endless amounts of bureaucratic and administrative paper work. If you will be out of town representing the University on an academic, athletic, or student organization trip please speak with me about taking the exam before you leave for your event.

You should attend the class for which you are registered. This is a no-budge-policy.
